Proper Installation is Key to Performance

When shopping for new windows and doors, most homeowners seek out products that meet specific requirements based on their preferences; for example, they almost always consider the aesthetics, reliability, and energy efficiency before making a purchase. Unfortunately, however, they often fail to consider the quality of the installation when researching their window and door replacement options. Make no mistake, proper installation methods are critical to the long-term performance of every new window and door.

Choosing the right installation company is every bit as important to the success of your replacement project as purchasing the right windows and doors in the first place, and we’ve prepared a quick list to identify just a few of the reasons why:

Code Violations

Getting the building permit alone is not enough, however. The installation expert you choose must be familiar with any number of building code requirements. For example, did you know new windows must meet the appropriate “design pressure” standards? “Design pressure” refers to how much wind and moisture your windows and doors can withstand, and it varies according to where your home or business is located.

Specific code requirements also apply to the installation of your doors, windows and glass walls. For example, the anchoring has to be as strong as it was when the window was tested in the lab. If your windows are not installed properly, they will not withstand winter blizzard winds or other extreme weather conditions.

In certain cases, your contractor may need to alter the window or door openings to satisfy local building codes. Building inspectors warn that this process is often not followed correctly. If an installer removes old windows incorrectly, they can break off the flange. Then, when they install the new windows, they may just put them in without a new flange, almost guaranteeing leakage problems in the future. The windows may look great after the installation is complete, but certainly won’t be sound. That’s why you need a trustworthy expert to make certain your replacement glass meets all the local regulations, function properly, and last for as long as you live in your home.

Water Leaks

As a homeowner, nothing is more infuriating than water leaks, especially if they happen around your brand new windows and doors. You may not notice a problem right away, but after a spring thaw or a particularly strong storm, water damage may appear. If your windows and doors suddenly spring a leak, flaws in the installation process may be at fault.

When this happens, it’s usually because your new windows aren’t level or “plumb.” Rain water can collect in the corners, and over time, begin seeping inside the building.

Inadequate sealing may also be the culprit. Foam and/or caulking needs to be applied carefully so no gaps are left. If your replacement windows are too small, a contractor should not try and disguise the problem by filling up the spaces with these substances. This method may work temporarily, but it will not work for long.

Energy Savings

New windows and doors should provide energy savings, particularly if your old ones were letting in the bitter winter winds or the hot summer temperatures. Make sure to choose the correct windows for the climate. Even the best replacement glass will perform poorly when it is not installed correctly. If the windows and doors have any gaps, your comfort will suffer right along with your energy bills.

Purchasing the right glass products is only half the battle. You must hire the right people to install your windows and doors in order to maximize the return on your investment.
